When you get the idea or feeling to become an entrepreneur and run your own business, this is not a free ride. Being an entrepreneur doesn’t mean that you are quitting your 9=5 job and suddenly you’ll become this free spirit that comes and goes as you please. Taking on this mind state will make you fail at anything you do. You must realize that being an entrepreneur doesn’t mean that you are on a permanent vacation and the word “entrepreneur” doesn’t translate into “lazy”.
I want to go over some reasons why the new entrepreneur will think that they are on a great vacation and also the reality of being an entrepreneur and the amount of work involved in making your new business succeed.
Why the new entrepreneur is lazy
There are many reasons and excuses that the new entrepreneur has as to why the slack off on their work, but I believe the biggest misconception is that when you start your own business you will work 10X less then when you worked for another company. This has to be the farthest thing from the truth. Starting your own business is hard work and you must be ready to face all kinds of extra obstacals that you normally wouldn’t deal with when working for someone else. Most new entrepreneurs aren’t ready for this type of responsibility, which causes their start-up to fail.
When you start something with the mindset that you are on a vacation so-to-speak, you are setting yourself up for failure. You will go into a new project and pick out the smallest most meaningless tasks and 90% of the time, you will not even finish those because you feel that “since I’m the boss, I can do it later”. This attitude will kill your company faster then you started it.
How to stop being lazy and start working
This might be a more simple answer then what you thought it would be but “START WORKING”! It’s really that simple. Bear down on the largest tasks you need to complete and start the process of completing them. Once you knock out 2-3 large tasks, you’ll see the smaller tasks and instantly know that you can fix them quicker and more efficiently then you would have with the lazy mindset. The confidence building that comes with fixing the bigger issues and actually buckling down and working is also great for your business and productivity.
Do not go into your business venture thinking that you are on vacation because it will not benefit your business. You want a good piece of advice? Start your business knowing that you’ll be pulling all nighters, working 16-20 hours a day and seeing small profits in the beginning. This will help you in the start-up phase and will keep you motivated to get through everything. Build your mind around the fact that being an entrepreneur is not easy work in the beginning. Yes, in the future you’ll have time to sit back and enjoy everything you’ve accomplished, but in the beginning, you’ll be working your &$% off so get ready for it ahead of time.
